Tourism in India is slowly becoming an important financial industry for the country of over a billion residents. In 2008, 5.37 million tourists visited India adding close to 12 million dollars in earnings to the economy, according to the India Ministry Of Tourism.
  1. Attractions

    • There are a variety of attractions across India, which cover the country's history and natural resources. The Taj Mahal located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh is a memorial built by emperor Shah Jahan for his late wives. Goa, on the western coast of India is known for its Portuguese-styled cathedrals amongst beaches such as Baga and Anjuna. Khajuraho Temples in Madhya Pradesh features the architecture of the Chandela dynasty.

    Transportation

    • Railways are the prominent method of transportation around India with locomotives offering routes throughout the country. City metro trains also run in a few major cities such as Delhi. Buses and rickshaws also run in most cities and are a cheaper option than railway tickets.

    Safety Tips

    • Pickpockets are common in India. Always keep your valuables close by and avoid using bags with hang down straps that can be quickly cut free. Women travelers should not use public transport after dark and should try to blend in with the locals. Never give out your hotel room number and always keep your doors locked.
