Contact the American Embassy in Italy. The American Embassy and Consulate in Italy maintains a detailed listing of English-speaking doctors by specialty for all major areas in the country. The easiest way to access this information is through the United States Diplomatic Mission to Italy website at http://italy.usembassy.gov/acs/professionals/doctors/doctors-main.asp.
Determine which consulate to contact. Italy is divided into four areas, each served by a branch or consulate of the U.S. Embassy: Rome; Milan and northern Italian cities such as Venice; Florence and surrounding hill towns; and Naples and southern Italian cities. On the U.S. Embassy website, click on the link at the top of the Main Doctors page for the area you are visiting. You'll see a page listing contact information about doctors by specialty. Depending on the consulate, physician information may also include office hours, fees, languages spoken and where they received their degree and training (such as a residency at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland) and citizenship (such as whether the doctor is an American citizen practicing in Italy).
If you are trying to locate an American doctor by phone:
In Rome, call 011 (+39) 6 46741.
In Milan, call 011 (+39) 2 290351.
In Florence, call +39 55 266 951
In Naples, call 011 (+39) 81 583 8111
Note that these phones numbers are valid when calling from the United Sates. They will change slightly if you are calling from Italy. A switchboard operator will transfer your call to the consulate staff, who will provide names and numbers of doctors who meet your needs.
Contact the appropriate doctor. Use the contact information supplied by the U.S. Embassy to phone the doctor. On this call, you can determine whether you are comfortable with the doctor's English and medical training before making an appointment.
