Currency in Norway: Norwegian Krone (NOK) Only Legal Tender

Norway's sole legal tender is the Norwegian krone (NOK, code: NOK, symbol: kr).

What's Accepted

• NOK cash (coins: 1, 5, 10, 20 kr; notes: 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 kr).
• Debit/Credit Cards: Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Diners – ubiquitous (even for 10 kr coffee). Contactless standard.
• MobilePay / Vipps: Domestic P2P/merchant apps (need Norwegian BankID).

Foreign Currency

• Not legal tender. Some tourist shops/hotels may accept EUR, USD, GBP—but at poor rates, often cash only, no change given.
• Do not rely on it. Use cards or withdraw NOK from ATMs (Minibank).

Practical Tips

• Notify bank of travel.
• No-fee travel cards (Wise, Revolut, Chase Sapphire, etc.) best for FX.
