What was the currency used in Colonial New york?

In colonial New York the economy was based on barter for the first few decades. Then, in the late 17th century, the British colonies began to issue their own paper currency. The first paper money in New York was issued in 1690, called bills of credit, and backed by the colonial treasury.

In addition to paper currency, various coins were used in colonial New York. These coins included the Spanish dollar, British pound, French livre, and Dutch guilder. The Spanish dollar was the most common coin in circulation.
