When did paper currency appear in Europe?

Paper currency first appeared in Europe in the 17th century. The first paper money was issued in Sweden in 1661 by the Stockholms Banco, a private bank. This was followed by the Bank of England, which issued paper money in 1694. Other European countries soon followed suit, and by the 18th century, paper currency had become the dominant form of currency in Europe.
