Consult a currency exchange website to determine the most current exchange rates before you leave for your trip. This will allow you to spot airport scammers or unlicensed exchange booths if you encounter them in Italy.
Check your map or guidebook to find your preferred point of exchange. A bank or post office will give you the lowest commissions, but often airport or railway kiosks and hotel desks are more convenient.
Decide how much money you want to exchange. While American dollars and British pounds are probably the most common, banks and post offices will accept all currency.
Show the teller how much money you want to exchange and ask how many euros you will receive in exchange. Agree upon the rate and commission charge before handing over your cash.
Present your currency to exchange to the teller and watch as he or she counts out your euros to be received.
