Nepal has many different-size bills and coins: 1, 2, 5 and 10 NPR coins, while bank notes come in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 NPR denominations.
However, many businesses throughout Nepal will not be able to except the larger 500 and 1000 NPR bills, because they won't have the extra change. It is best to carry smaller bank notes.
Outside of Solu Khumbu and the Annapuna trails, exchanging foreign money for Nepal Rupees is nearly impossible. It is best to exchange all the money you will need in one of these larger cities, or even before arriving in Nepal.
Also, ATMs are available in the larger cities and do normally accept Visa and Mastercard; however, it is not unheard of to have the ATM only accept local cards and "eat" the non-accepted card. Therefore, it is best to use an ATM during business hours, in case this happens.
