How to Calculate Currency Conversions

Currency conversion calculations are accomplished with just a single operation—multiplication or division—depending on how the conversion rate is given. The ability to convert currency from one country to another is an important skill for travelers heading to another country, for anyone purchasing something from another country or for anyone sending money to a friend or relative in another country.

Find a conversion chart that gives the original currency and the conversion rate to the desired currency. X-rates.com has a chart with the exchange rates between several common currencies. Money.cnn.com also has a chart, though the chart only gives conversion rates from American dollars to several other common currencies.

Write down your initial amount of the first currency. Also write down the currency conversion rate.

Divide your starting amount by the currency conversion rate if the currency conversion rate is “currency 1” per “currency 2.” Multiply your starting amount by the currency conversion rate if the currency conversion rate is “currency 2” per “currency 1.” This number is the amount of money you have in the second currency.
