How to Buy Swiss Francs

Swiss francs can be purchased outside Switzerland from foreign currency brokers, including some banks. Switzerland is outside the euro currency system, although euros are generally accepted there, and the Swiss franc has generally proved stronger and more secure than other currencies including the euro and the U.S. dollar in the first decade of the 21st century. Note that the value of any currency can increase or decrease at any time in response to market conditions.
  1. How Many to Buy

    • Decide how many Swiss francs you wish to buy. You may need a relatively small amount for a trip to Switzerland, although euros will serve almost equally well for such a purpose. On the other hand, you may wish to buy a larger sum as an investment, in effect betting that the Swiss franc will remain stronger than the currency you are exchanging for it.

    Buying From a Broker

    • Switzerland is not part of the euro system.

Currency brokers such as Travelex, American Express Travel Offices and some banks will exchange Swiss francs for most other mainstream currencies. You can make a purchase at a branch office. Remember that individual branches may run short of any particular currency, so call ahead if you are making a large purchase. Brokers may sell very large sums of a currency, but maximums may apply and may change at any time.

    Buying Online

    • Some brokers may take orders online. Travelex allows clients to place small or large online orders for currency, including Swiss Francs. Purchases may be picked up from Travelex offices or delivered free of charge.
