One obvious solution to the problem of an overly full trunk is to remove one or two items. Remove items that are the least important, largest or hard-topped first and continue removing until the trunk will close freely.
Fastening the trunk to the body of the car with bungee cords is a popular solution to the full trunk problem. Select the appropriate length and strength of cord and hook one end to inner lip of the trunk lid and the other to the inner lip of the trunk basin. Another option is to stretch bungee cords (of the longer variety) cross-ways around the trunk, attaching the cord hooks in the lips of the rear wheel wells. Whichever method is selected, be sure to use a number of cords and check thoroughly before driving.
Sometimes simply moving around the items in a trunk will make enough room to close it. Martha Stewart recommends "arranging supplies in a handled bin." Investing in a catch-all basket, canvas bag or car trunk organizer will help items fit securely and neatly into place and make shutting the trunk easier.
If all else fails or you discover your trunk's inability to shut has nothing to do with the volume of items inside it, take the vehicle to a mechanic for professional help.
