What to Bring on an Alaskan Cruise?

Packing well for your cruise will save you the painful necessity of purchasing items you have forgotten at twice the price it would have cost at home. Thoughtful packers are better prepared for the temperatures, activities and events on and off-shore during the cruise. Enjoy your vacation knowing that everything you've anticipated -- and maybe even a few things you have not - are covered.
  1. Temperatures

    • Expect some chilly temperatures during your Alaskan cruise. Temperatures range from 40 to 70 F during the daylight hours and will drop into the 30's and 40's at night from May through September. Because there is such a fluctuation of temperatures, dressing in layers allows you the freedom to add or subtract clothing as necessary. Some light rain is possible, so be sure to pack a light slicker or rainwear.

    Packing for Women

    • Ladies, remember to pack beauty essentials such as a curling iron or blow dryer, hair care items, tweezers, deodorant and perfumes, razors and shaving cream, makeup, creams and lotions plus toothbrush and paste.

Daytime and casual wear should include walking and hiking shoes, swimsuits and cover-ups, sandals, nightwear, short-sleeved and long-sleeved shirts, shorts, slacks and four casual outfits for informal ship evenings. In addition, be sure to pack a windbreaker or two, sweatshirts, a raincoat and some waterproof footwear. Ladies may also want to bring three formal outfits for formal evenings on the ship, jewelry, pantyhose, an evening jacket or wrap, belts and an evening bag.

    Packing for Men

    • Personal care items for men should include toothbrush and paste, cologne, deodorant, nail clippers, razors and shaving cream, nose hair trimmers or tweezers, brush or comb, hair care items, pajamas and a robe.

Pack for daytime and casual days on the ship by bringing khaki or light pants or shorts, jeans, casual shirts and turtlenecks, sweatshirts, gloves, sun-visors or hats, t-shirts, a waterproof jacket and windbreaker, swimwear, exercise or workout clothing, casual shoes and flip-flops.

Formal nights on a 7-day cruise usually contain three casual nights where attire can be button down shirts and slacks, two sport jacket evenings and several formal nights where you will probably want a suit and tie. Be sure to pack dress socks and shoes and any necessary cummerbunds, vests or suspenders.

    Important Items to Remember

    • It is a good idea to make a checklist of important items before departing for your trip, such as passports, cruise and airline tickets, medical insurance cards, driver's license and insurance card, cash, ATM cards, prepaid phone cards, traveler's checks and emergency contact numbers.

Be sure to bring any necessary prescription drugs and medications, sunscreen, a first aid kit, earplugs, caps and visors, lotions, wipes and bug spray. Other items you may wish to include are a small umbrella, camera equipment, books and reading material, reading and sunglasses, binoculars and a guidebook. Pack extra film and batteries for any electronic equipment you may have, as they will be much more expensive to purchase on the trip.
