Required Documentation for Crossing the Canadian Border

Canada is the country attached to the United States along the entire Northern border.
The Canadian Border Services Agency has stringent rules for crossing the Canadian border. Each car crossing the border is stopped and searched and each passenger must present the proper documentation to be allowed admittance into the country.
  1. Passports

    • Passports are not required for American citizens to cross the Canadian border either by air, land or sea. However, to re-enter the United States, American citizens are required to present a passport.

    Documentation

    • To cross the Canadian border, American citizens must present proof of citizenship. According to the Canadian Border Services Agency acceptable forms of proof of citizenship are birth certificates, certificates of naturalization and photo identification.

    Traveling with Children

    • To cross the Canadian border with children, parents must have the child's birth certificate. If you are traveling with a large number of vehicles driving through the Canadian Border, children must arrive at border patrol in the same vehicle in which their parents are traveling.

    Children with custody agreements

    • For parents who are divorced and share custody, a copy of your legal custody agreement must be presented when crossing the border. Canadian officials recommend carrying with you a letter of authorization signed by the other parent allowing you to take your child out of the country. Include the parents' name, address, and telephone number on any letters of authorization.

    Non-Parental Travel

    • Adults bringing children into Canada who are not the parents of said children must provide the Canadian authorities with proper documentation. This includes a letter of authorization from both parents of the child.

    Non-U.S. Citizens

    • Non-U.S. citizens crossing the Canadian border are required to have their Visa present. Without the appropriate Visa, foreign travelers will be denied entrance into Canada.

    Immigrants

    • Immigrants crossing the Canadian border are required to have proper identification and the appropriate forms, either their passport or visa, depending on where they are immigrating from. Immigrants must declare all monetary and and personal effects upon crossing the Canadian border. The appropriate forms for declaration are available on the Canada Border Service Agency website.
