Drive north to one of the four border crossings along the Washington-Canada line. From west to east, the four crossings are the Peace Arch crossing on Interstate 5, the Pacific Highway crossing at Highway 543, the Lynden/Aldergrove Crossing at Highway 539 and the Sunmas/Huntington crossing on Highway 9.
Show your government-issued photo identification, such as a passport or driver's license, and proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate, to the border services officer at the crossing.
Declare all food, plants, animals and animal hides that you are carrying across the border. Declare other valuable goods that you are carrying for personal use while you are in Canada, such as clothing, sports equipment, cameras and personal computers. You must declare these items when you arrive in Canada and take them back into Washington with you when you leave, or you may have to pay duties or taxes on them.
Pay a security deposit for your goods if the border services officer asks you to do so. If you have to pay a deposit, the officer will give you a temporary admission permit, Form E29B. When you return to the United States, show the goods you declared and your copy of the form to the border services officer, and he will give you a receipt copy of the form. The Canadian government will refund your security deposit by mail.
