Obtain an original valid rabies vaccination certificate for your dog or cat from a licensed veterinarian in the United States. The form must be written in English or in French, and the form must clearly identify your animal and state that it is currently vaccinated against rabies. The certificate should also identify your pet's breed, color, weight, and any other identifying information and also include the trade name of the rabies vaccine used, including serial number and duration of validity. Canada recognizes the three year rabies vaccination. Canada has no waiting time that is imposed between vaccination for rabies and the time your pet is brought into the country.
Present the rabies certificate to the inspector at the border crossing. The inspector will ensure the vaccination is current and the description on the vaccination form matches your pet. You do not need to notify the port of entry in advance of your arrival with a pet. There is always an inspector on duty at the port of entry.
Allow the inspector at the border crossing to examine your pet. The inspector will perform a visual examination to make sure that your pet has are no visible signs of illness. Domesticated cats, dogs and ferrets that originate from the United States are exempt from inspection fees.
