How to Cross the Border With a Green Card

A green card is the informal name given to a United States Permanent Resident Card or I-551. Those in possession of a green card are granted rights to enter, work and live in the US. In order to apply for a green card, an application process that looks into your eligibility and background is required.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrive at your port of entry to the US early, expecting to wait about 30 minutes to clear customs. In some land borders, the wait time may be longer during busier hours.

    • 2

Bring the right documentation. If you were absent from the US for more than a year, be sure to apply for a re-entry permit before attempting to cross the border in addition to your green card, otherwise your green card status may be unverified. If you were out of the country for more than six months, expect the immigration officer to ask additional questions.

    • 3

Be aware of goods and food restrictions before crossing the border or you may be stopped and checked.
