How to Cross the Mexico-Belize Border by Rental Car

Crossing the Mexico-Belize border in a rental car requires some planning. Travelers are required to present a valid, stamped passport for departure and entry and must have proof the rental car is allowed to leave the country of origin. Proof is the written consent letter given to the driver from the rental car company.

Instructions

  1. Entering and Exiting Belize

    • 1

Use the Internet or ask your travel agent for information on rental car companies in Mexico that allow travel across the border into Belize. Not all rental car companies provide this service.

    • 2

Call or e-mail the rental car company to book your rental. Ask the rental car company to send you a Spanish and English version of the border-crossing consent letter via fax or postal mail so you can review the agreement and any stipulations prior to your trip.

    • 3

Take your copies of the consent letter to the car rental establishment. Ask for an updated consent letter that is written, signed and dated in both Spanish and English. Keep the letter in a safe place, such as a locked glove compartment, because you will need to present it at the Mexico-Belize border.

    • 4

Purchase Mexican rental car insurance during your stay. Mexican car insurance rates are typically $2 to $3 per day in 2010.

    • 5

Make sure each person traveling with you has a valid passport that will remain valid throughout your trip. Present the passports to a customs official at the Mexican border. Have your passport stamped by a customs official when leaving Mexico to prove legal departure. Pay Mexican per-person departure fees at the border.

    • 6

Purchase Belize rental car insurance before reaching Belize Immigrations, as you will not be permitted to cross without insurance. There are a number of insurance establishments before you reach the border that charge approximately $2 to $3 per day for coverage in 2010.

    • 7

Present valid passports for each traveler in your car at the Belize border station. Get your passports stamped to prove legal entry into the country. This will prove helpful throughout your stay in Belize.

    • 8

Present your rental car border-crossing consent form written, signed and dated by the rental car company to prove you have legal permission to cross the border with the rental car. You can not cross without it. Purchase a temporary vehicle importation registration for your rental car at the border station.

    • 9

Set aside approximately $15 per person to pay Belize departure fees (charged when staying in the country less than 24 hours) and set aside approximately $5 per person to pay PACT fees charged to all foreigners upon departure from Belize.
