Indian dress is quite conservative, especially when compared to Western dress. While Indians are very accustomed to foreigners, particularly in the major cities, dress respectfully and appropriately. Avoid wearing tight or revealing clothing. Long pants are suitable for both men and women. Women who prefer wearing dresses or skirts should be sure they cover the legs, ideally down to the ankles. If you’re a guest at someone’s home, take off your shoes at the door. At temples, shrines or historic sites, you’ll most likely have to take off your shoes as well.
Depending on the places you choose to dine, you probably won't have utensils. It is customary in India to eat only with the right hand, as the left hand is considered unclean. Even when eating rice or curries, use only the fingers of your right hand. Wash your hands before and after every meal. If you are dining with Indians, do not pass them food with your left hand because this is offensive. At the end of your meal, leave a small bit of food on your plate to signal that you are satisfied. An empty plate means you are still hungry. When in doubt, observe your fellow local diners for hints of what is appropriate.
At some restaurants, especially in Mumbai and New Delhi, there usually is a service charge, so no tip is expected. However, if there is no service charge, it is appropriate to leave about 10 percent tip. At hotels, sometimes you’ll see a central tip box. Five to 7 percent of your hotel charge per night is proper, especially if you’re satisfied with your stay. Bellboys usually expect a tip for small room-service tasks, but it is not necessary if there is a tip box in the hotel lobby. If you hire your own driver for tours, tip only if you are pleased with the service. Taxi or rickshaw operators generally do not need to be tipped.
Indians are very curious and inquisitive, particularly of foreign tourists. Do not be offended if they strike up a casual conversation with you, even out on the street. Indians are a very open people, so don’t be surprised if they ask you personal questions, such as where you’re from, how old you are, what you do for a living, and whether you’re married. Feel free to ask these questions of them as well. In all cases, use your best judgment.
