How to Get Immunizations for Saudi Arabia

You'll need a number of different immunizations if you are going to be traveling to Saudi Arabia. The specific vaccinations will depend on the part of the country you're planning to visit and how long you're planning to remain.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit during the annual pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj season) and the Saudi Arabian government will require you to show proof of immunization against meningococcal bacteria.

    • 2

Get shots to protect you from contracting Hepatitis A (recommended for all visitors to Saudi Arabia) and Hepatitis B (required only if you're staying for 6 months or longer).

    • 3

Get a typhoid shot if you think your travels are going to have you eating or drinking in places other than a resort, a modern hotel or a major restaurant chain.

    • 4

Ensure that your basic immunizations are taken care of. You should get a diptheria and tetanus booster shot if it's been longer than 10 years since you've had one. You'll also need to get shots protecting you against the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR immunizations), if you haven't already.

    • 5

Check whether you need a polio vaccination. This is required for all visitors under the age of 15 who are arriving in Saudi Arabia via a nation where polio outbreaks still occur. If you've never gotten a polio vaccine as an adult, you should ask your doctor to give you a booster to protect yourself against infection.

    • 6

Add a rabies shot to your treatment regimen if you expect to be coming into contact with wild animals during your trip to Saudi Arabia.

    • 7

      * Get a flu shot, if you're going to be going to Saudi Arabia during what's known as Hajj season. Hajj season is a religious observance, and the flu spreads quickly due to the large number of people in close contact with one another in mosques and during services. The exact dates of Hajj season vary, but it is usually in the months from November to January.

Get proper malaria immunization if you're going to be going to any of the following parts of Saudi Arabia: Al Madinah, Tabuk, Najran, Makkah, Asir, Jizan and Al Bahah. The cities of Mecca, Medina, Ta'if and Jeddah do not pose a significant risk of malaria infection to travelers, so you can skip the malaria shot if your visit is going to be confined to these areas.
