Take a live, oral typhoid vaccine at least one week before departure. The usual dose is one capsule every other day for four doses. Children under six will need an alternative vaccine, which your pediatrician can recommend. Do not take the oral vaccine if you are currently on antibiotics.
Remember that the vaccination is only 70 percent effective in the prevention of typhoid, so following good sanitary practices is vital.
Buy bottled water, or boil your drinking water for 1 minute before you drink it. Choose bottled carbonated water over uncarbonated water. Do not drink water from the tap.
Avoid ice unless you know that the ice was made from bottled or boiled water. Avoid popsicles and cold soups.
Drink only pasteurized milk.
Eat foods that are served steaming hot, so you know they have been thoroughly cooked.
Avoid raw vegetables and fruits, as well as any foods from local restaurants or street vendors.
Wash your hands frequently, especially when you return to your hotel after being in the markets and at the stores. Consider keeping a packet of moist towelettes with you at all times.
