Make several copies of the pages in your passport that contain personal information about you; these are the first two pages of your passport. Place these copies in your suitcase or folded into your clothes in a drawer so you can access them if needed. If you lose your passport while traveling, you can take these copies to the U.S. Embassy and apply for a new passport.
Find a secure place to store your passport at home when you are not traveling. This secure place can be a hiding place you are confident no one will find or it can be a locked safe to which only you have the combination.
Carry your passport with you if you cannot find a secure hiding place for it at home while not traveling. Make sure the passport is tucked into a wallet rather than carried loosely in a purse so it is easy to find. Check regularly to make sure your passport is still there to avoid losing it.
Carry your passport with you while traveling overseas. When in public places, your passport should always be tucked into a place that can be sealed with buttons or a zipper. This might be a fanny pack hidden under your shirt or a purse; if you use a purse, the purse must zip shut. If your passport is not well-hidden, a thief could easily steal it.
Check regularly to make sure you are still carrying your passport while traveling internationally. You should regularly check your purse, fanny pack or pocket to make sure your passport is still there.
