Pelican Case Alternatives

Though it also manufactures advanced-lighting systems and durable shipping containers, Pelican Products is perhaps most famous for its line of rugged injection-molded protector cases. These are waterproof, leak proof and crush proof, and they come in sizes ranging from miniature -- for SD information cards -- to very large -- for anything from photography equipment to rifles. However, Pelican cases are not the only game in town when it comes to transporting fragile objects through harsh conditions.
  1. HPRC

    • Plaber Srl, known in the United States as HPRC -- which stands for High Performance Resin Cases -- is an Italian manufacturer of protective hard cases for products ranging from electronic or information-technology equipment to cameras and lights. Many of its products are made from a proprietary material called TTX01, a strong and lightweight resin material. HPRC cases are watertight, impact-proof and resistant to temperatures ranging from 80 degrees Celsius to -40 degrees Celsius.

    Underwater Kinetics

    • Like Pelican Products, Underwater Kinetics is a manufacturer of cases and lighting systems. Its watertight cases are sealed with hollow silicone tubing, which retains its shape and effectiveness over years of usage. Underwater Kinetics cases also come in a range of sizes, from the small UltraBox line to the large Transit and Loadout cases. Its high-impact and field-repairable resin -- manufactured by ABS Construction -- can be had in custom colors. Underwater Kinetics cases are outfitted with a full-length piano hinge with a stainless-steel pin.

    Doskocil

    • Doskocil cases are guaranteed to be unbreakable, dust free and watertight. The solid material-to-air ratio is increased, which increases the overall strength of the case. A Doskocil case is also outfitted with four closing latches instead of only two. This extra security makes them popular with hunters and others who carry firearms. Unlike Pelican cases, Doskocil cases are available in only two sizes -- 17 1/8 inches by 12 inches by 7 1/4 inches and 18 7/8 inches by 14 1/4 inches by 8 1/4 inches-- and two colors, black and metallic gray.

    Hardigg

    • Hardigg cases are produced by the process of rotomolding, or rotational molding. This is where a heated hollow mold is filled with molten material and then rotated slowly so that the material is distributed evenly around the mold, making the final product stronger and more even. In addition, the corners and edges of Hardigg cases are reinforced for extra toughness, and they are shaped with stacking ease in mind. Hardigg also offers several optional benefits for its cases, including a riveted card holder, removable or fixed casters and a valve system for increased airtightness.

    Other Alternatives

    • Other manufacturers of cases similar to Pelican's include Seahorse, SKB and Northstar. Cases intended to carry specific items through rough terrain are also available. Lowepro manufactures a series of camera backpacks that protect equipment against various types of rough terrain, including underwater and extreme temperatures. Otterbox's waterproof cases are intended for small electronic devices, such as portable music players and laptops.
