How to Repair the Wheel Housing on Luggage

Traveling has become a little more difficult. Extra security screening, reduced carry-on luggage sizes and increased fees for excess baggage all contribute to travel frustrations. Not much is possible to change these inconveniences, but you have the ability to keep your wheeled luggage moving freely. The wheeled suitcases use polymer wheels set in inline housings. These sometimes get gummed up or lose lubrication, leading to stuck wheels. Repair these little troubles and keep the skies friendly.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Empty the luggage and turn it upside down so you have access to the wheel housing. Tighten all screws that attach the housing itself to the luggage, ensuring the plastic housing is secure on the bag.

    • 2

Blow the compressed air into the inline wheel housings to blow out any accumulated junk or debris. Push the wheels to test. If still sticky, grab the Allen wrench.

    • 3

Insert the Allen wrench into the set-screws holding the wheels in place and turn counter-clockwise until they come out and the wheel is free. Remove the wheels.

    • 4

Drip a little 3-in-1 oil onto the wheel's center and to the inline housing. Wipe away any excess. Set the wheels back into the housings and thread the screws into the wheels. Place the Allen wrench onto the screws and turn clockwise until tight and the wheels are firmly back in place.
