Bahamas Travel Requirements for U.S. Citizens

The Bahamas, located in the Caribbean, is a group of hundreds of islands. Tourism and finance are the main sectors of its economy. The Bahamas became independent from the United Kingdom in 1973. Its capital is Nassau. It is frequented for its beaches, beauty and serenity.

    Entry Requirements

    • Different documents will be needed for entry to the Bahamas depending on what country a traveler is a resident and/or citizen of.

    By Air and Sea

    • U.S. citizens traveling to the Bahamas need a U.S. passport, a passport card or a WHTI-compliant document (Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative) in order to re-enter the U.S. when traveling by air. As of the summer of 2009, with the exception of closed loop cruises, those traveling by sea are also required to show a passport or other valid document.

    Chidren

    • Children 18 years old and under must only provide proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate.

    Visa

    • No Bahamian visa is required. However, if U.S. citizens are planning an extended stay, a visa may be required.

    Return Ticket

    • U.S. citizens must show a return or onward-bound ticket.

    Money

    • Proof of funds is required to show that visitors can support their stay.
