Travel Requirements to Italy for American Citizens

Whether you are planning to visit the canals of Venice, the Colosseum and Forum in Rome or the ruins of Pompeii near Naples, there are a few basic passport requirements to be aware of before planning your trip to Italy. The requirements are minimal for visits up to 90 days. If you are planning to stay in Italy for an extended period, you are required to obtain a nonimmigrant visa before entering the country.
  1. Stays Up to 90 Days

    • As an American citizen, you will need a valid U.S passport to visit Italy.

If you are a U.S. citizen visiting Italy for vacation or business, you can enjoy Italy's scenery, good food and leisurely lifestyle for up to 90 days without a visa. In this case, you will need only a U.S. passport to enter. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the period of your stay. For example, for a two-week vacation, your passport must be valid for four months; for a two-month stay your passport should be valid for five months.

Italy is one of 24 European countries that are party to the Schengen agreement. This means that all border controls are eliminated between all European countries. If you enter Italy on a two-week vacation and decide to take a train to France for a short weekend stay, then, you will most likely never be asked for your passport by customs officials. However, be sure the take your passport with you. When you check into a hotel or if you rent a car or use the services of a bank, you will be asked to present it.

    Stays Longer Than 90 Days

    • If you are planning a visit to Italy for more than 90 days, a visa is required. For detailed and up-to-date information concerning visa requirements for Italy, travelers should contact the Italian Embassy in Washington, D.C. or Italian Consulates General located in Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia or San Francisco.
