Visa Waiver Program Requirements

The visa waiver program (VWP), which allows travelers to enter the U.S. without a specific immigration visa, limits the time each traveler is allowed to stay in the U.S. and is limited to citizens or residents of qualifying countries.
  1. Authorization

    • Although travelers entering the U.S. under the VWP do not require a visa they must apply online for authorization to enter the U.S. The VWP program is only applicable to travelers entering the U.S. for business or pleasure.

    Nations

    • The VWP is limited to citizens and legal residents of countries participating in the program, which include Andorra, Australia, Austria, Denmark, Switzerland and the UK. Travelers entering the U.S. under the VWP are entitled to stay for a maximum of 90 days, which cannot be extended nor can immigration status be altered when entering under the VWP.

    Passports

    • When entering the U.S. under the VWP, travelers must be in possession of a passport with a electronically readable zone. Passports issued after Oct. 26, 2005, must contain at least a digital photo, while passports issued on or after Oct. 26, 2006, must be classed as an electronic passport containing an electronic chip containing the traveler's biometric information.
