What was the original purpose of Robert la salle journey?

The original purpose of Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle's journey was to find a route to the "Western Sea" (believed to be the Pacific Ocean) and establish French control over the interior of North America. He was commissioned by King Louis XIV and Minister of Marine Jean-Baptiste Colbert to explore and map the region, with the ultimate goal of establishing a trading empire for France.
