Take Exit 407 from I-40 out of Knoxville, Tennessee to TN 66 South. Follow US 441 through Sevierville, Gatlinburg and into the national parkway. Check in at the Sugarland Visitors Center for trail maps and hiking advisories.
Driving past the Sugarland Visitor Center you will note several quiet walkways. Watch on the left for Sugarland Valley Nature Trail. There is enough parking for 4 to 6 vehicles. This trail should not be overlooked.
Enjoy the Appalachian forest filled with hardwood trees, dogwood, redbuds and over 1,500 species of wildflowers. There is an abundance of fern and flowers during the spring. Mountain laurel and rhododendrons bloom profusely during the early summer.
Respect encounters with wildlife. Squirrels, fox, rabbits, turkeys and many other animals have been viewed from this nature trail. Encounters with bears are rare in the lower altitudes of the Great Smoky Mountains, but not impossible. The Sugarland Visitor's Center provides information on where bears have been seen.
Stay on the trail. Do not disturb plants, rocks or animals. The less than half-mile hike is filled with natural wonders that should be preserved for future generations.
