How to Hike in Lake Berryessa

Lake Berryessa has 165 miles of shoreline and is 23 miles long. Over 1.5 million visitors travel to this remote lake in the Napa Valley region of California each year. There are several hiking trails along the lake, most of which are suitable for beginner hikers. Set off on foot to see spectacular views and wildlife such as bald eagles and white pelicans.

      Pack a day pack with items you'll need such as water bottles, a picnic lunch, first-aid kit, sun block and insect repellent. Lake Berryessa is a 45-minute trip from any major towns or facilities, so you'll need to bring these items with you. If you forget anything, there is a resort on the lake where you can purchase items.

      Visit the Lake Berryessa Field Office and Visitors Center at 5520 Knoxville Road in Napa to pick up a trail map.

      Choose your trail and head to the trailhead. North End Trail hugs the north shoreline of the lake for 4.3 miles, one-way, and is considered a moderate-level hike. Hike in the Lake Berryessa Wildlife Area for an easy hike on a gravel fire access road. Pope Canyon Trail is 2.1 miles long and offers a wide path for beginner hikers. For a more challenging hike, choose the Cedar Roughs Trail, where you'll climb a high ridge with views of the lake. Hikers with dogs can take the Smittle Creek Trail, which lasts for 2.6 with views of Big and Small Islands along the way. Stebbins Cold Canyon Trail provides a challenge for physically fit hikers around a four-mile loop with elevation gains of 1500 feet.
