- Have at least a high school diploma or equivalent
- Complete at least 40 hours of insurance adjuster training approved by the Massachusetts Division of Insurance
Step 2: Experience
- Have at least 2 years of experience relevant to insurance adjusting, including claims investigation, loss assessment, settlement negotiations, or policy drafting
- This experience can be gained through work in the insurance industry, a public adjuster firm, or as an independent insurance adjuster
Step 3: Examination
- Pass the Public Adjuster licensing examination administered by the Massachusetts Division of Insurance
- The exam covers topics such as insurance laws and regulations, insurance policies and contracts, claims investigations, and claims settlements
Step 4: Licensing
- Submit a license application to the Massachusetts Division of Insurance along with the required fee and proof of education and experience
- The license is valid for 2 years and can be renewed every 2 years by completing 20 hours of continuing education
Step 5: Ethics and Conduct
- Maintain high ethical standards and follow the code of conduct for Public Adjusters in Massachusetts
- This includes acting in the best interests of the policyholder, providing accurate and timely information, and avoiding any conflict of interest
