Things to Do in Vegas From Jan 13 to 15

Las Vegas, the city that never sleeps, is abuzz with activity in January. The annual Consumer Electronics Show is held there, and so is the annual Adult Entertainment Expo, both traditional year-openers at Sin City. By the middle of the month, both shows are gone, and with the temperature typically brisk--in marked contrast to the unbearable dry-heat summer--it's a great time to be in Vegas, baby.
  1. Five Cool Concerts and Comics

    • Donny & Marie Osmond perform at the Flamingo at 7:30 p.m. The teen idol and his sister had a top-rated TV show two decades ago and are now on a full-fledged revival.

The Platters, Coasters and Marvelettes--at least, key members from each of the original groups--will play oldies at the Congo Room at the Sahara at 8 p.m. It's rare to see all three bands together on one stage, but hey, this is Vegas.

Comedian Carrot Top plays the Atrium Showroom at the Luxor at 8 p.m. He's been a popular Vegas attraction for years, and his popularity shows no signs of waning.

The Blue Man Group play at the Blue Man Group Theatre in the Venetian at 8 p.m. Yes, this wacky musical troupe is so popular they have their own theatre.

Comedians Penn & Teller perform at the Rio at 9 p.m. This duo, known for their off-color rib-ticklers, have been a Vegas mainstay for years and also have several hit comedy albums under their belts.

Many of these performers--all of them, actually, except for the trio of oldies bands--are booked for indefinite stays, so there's a good chance they'll be back in January 2011--and maybe even January 2012 and beyond.

    Five Cool Stage Shows

    • "The Lion King," Disney's Tony Award-winning stage musical, runs at the Mandalay Bay Theatre, 8 p.m. Those who missed it on Broadway will appreciate a chance to see it now.

The Mel Brooks comedy "The Producers," with David Hasselhoff of "Baywatch" fame, is staged at Le Theatre des Arts at 8 p.m. Anything Mel Brooks is funny, and with David Hasselhoff included in the cast, this is one show you're not going to want to miss!

Andrew Lloyd Weber's musical "The Phantom of the Opera" is staged in the Phantom of the Opera Showroom at the Venetian at 7 p.m. (second show at 9:30 p.m., Thursday, January 14, only).

A tribute show to the famed "Rat Pack" is held at the Greek Isles Hotel and Casino at 5:30 p.m. Those with a hankering for original Rat Pack--Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Joey Lawrence--since the first "Ocean's 11," will have the next best thing.

Cirque du Soleil troupe performs tribute to the Beatles with "Cirque du Soleil LOVE" at the Mirage at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., January 14 and 15 only. It's a killer combination: one of the world's most acclaimed circus troupes doing a tribute to one of the world's most famous rock bands of all time.

    Only in Vegas

    • Head to Las Vegas Skydiving at Jean Airport (see Resources, below) for a once-in-a-lifetime, only-in-Vegas experience. You're strapped to a certified skydiving instructor, flown to a height of 14,000 feet, and then booted out of the plane for a fall at 125 mph for up to a minute before a 10-minute canopy ride down.

Treat the kids to a nonstop circus at Circus Circus, one of the last of the old-time Strip hotels. It's the only hotel in Las Vegas--and, in all likelihood, the world--with a permanent, indoor circus, complete with clowns, trapeze artists, jugglers and even contortionists. The fun starts daily at 11 a.m.

Hit the Liberace Museum, a tribute to one of America's most flamboyant showmen ever. The musuem is divided into two areas, one displaying his cars and pianos and the other, his costumes and jewelry. For a real kick visit the gift store, which sells everything from CDs to collector pens, thimbles, T-shirts, music boxes and even a desktop standee.
