How to Obtain a Work Permit in Italy

Non-EU citizens wishing to work in Italy for any period of time need to obtain a work permit before arriving in the country. Italian work permits are administrated regionally, meaning that obtaining a work permit requires a slightly different process in different parts of the country. However, the same basic steps apply, with most of the work being carried out between your prospective employer and the local authorities.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain an Italian sponsor company. In order to obtain a work permit, you first need to be accepted for a job by a prospective Italian employer. You will then need their help in the following steps.

    • 2

Wait for your prospective employer to apply for a work permit on your behalf. First, they must visit the provincial employment office (Ufficio Provinciale del Lavoro e della Massima Occupazione) of the city in which you hope to work and request clearance. Clearance will depend on whether your qualifications distinguish you from those of the local labor market. If preliminary clearance is granted, your employer will then need to apply on your behalf to regional and central authorities for a work permit.

    • 3

Wait for your prospective employer to send your work contract and permit to you. Allow time for processing of your permit. Wait times for processing vary from region to region within Italy, but on average it takes about two months if all clearance is granted.

    • 4

Visit your nearest Italian consular office to submit your application for a work visa to Italy. Along with your completed application form, two passport photos, your valid passport and proof of financial stability, you will need to bring the work contract and work permit sent by your prospective employer.
