How to Obtain a Swiss Work Permit

If you would like to work in Switzerland, you will have an easier time of it if you live in a country that is a member of the European Union. Preference for permits is given to these countries over others. A company must also prove that it cannot find as qualified a candidate as you for the position within the country of Switzerland (or an EU country). Work permits come hand in hand with residency permits and can take two or three months to process.

Instructions

    • 1

Receive a letter offering employment from the Swiss company and accept the offer.

    • 2

Receive a pre-authorization for a residency permit from the potential employer. The company will apply for and get this permit. Also, receive the employment contract.

    • 3

Bring the pre-authorization for a residency permit and employment contract with you to the country. Take the documents with you to the local cantonal authority where you will be working. This is the person who will provide you with the residency/work permit application. Fill it out and present the other documents as well. The application approval process can take several months.
