Inspect the fabric or fiber material of the pillows. Most pillows come in three forms: foam, man-made or down. They can also come in a blend, such as a down and polyester blend. There are advantages and disadvantages to each. While a synthetic, or man-made, pillow like polyester is a firm choice, a down pillow has a softer feel. Since many people can be allergic to down, blend pillows are made to give the consumer the best of both worlds.
Sit on the pillow to test the comfort of it. The choice you make will depend on your personal preference as some people prefer firm pillows while others prefer soft pillows.
Check that the pillow cover is weather proof or suitable for the elements outdoors, if you are using the furniture and pillow as lawn furniture. If the pillow is meant for furniture on an enclosed porch or patio you do not need to check if it is weather-proof.
Evaluate the seams on the pillow to make sure there are no loose threads or seams pulling apart.
Check the sturdiness and placement of the straps that attach the pillows to the furniture. Check to see if they are held in place by Velcro, snaps or buttons. A Velcro strap can be worn down with continued use, but are often more adjustable than a snap or button.
Test the pillow and the straps to ensure it fits securely around the chair and stays in place as you move around.
Collapse, or close up, the chair to make sure the pillow fits snugly inside.
