Items Needed for a Passport

To enter any country outside the United States, including Canada and Mexico, via foot, water or air, you must provide a valid passport. Any United States citizen is eligible for a passport to travel, but you must provide the proper documents to be approved. This process can take up to six weeks, so be sure to plan ahead when preparing for international travel.
  1. Application

    • The first step in obtaining a passport is obtaining a DS-11 application from the Department of State. You can do this online or pick up a copy at your local post office. Complete the form and make a photocopy of the document. Take the completed form to the post office where you will meet with an official to confirm the information. All information on the application must be up-to-date and accurate.

    Identification

    • You must supply the official, in person, with government-issued photo identification such as a driver's license or identification card. The information on the ID must match the information on your application as well. You will also need to provide proof of citizenship, such as a green card or a certified copy of your birth certificate. These items will be collected with the application for verification purposes.

    Photo

    • To obtain a passport, you must provide two passport-size photos. It is best to have these professionally taken at a drug or photo store that specializes in these photos. These pictures must be a specific size and meet specific requirements showing your face.

    Fee

    • Every person applying for a passport must pay a one-time application fee. This can be paid by check, cash or money order at your application meeting. Keep in mind, you will need to pay a fee again when it is time to renew your passport.
