Suitcase Size Restrictions for Airlines

Air travel, especially with respect to baggage restrictions and fees, can be daunting.The following is a list of baggage allowances for American Airlines, Delta Air and Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air to help get you off the ground quicker, more easily, and hopefully, with less expense to you.
  1. American Airlines

    • For flights within the U.S., U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Canada, passengers are allowed one carry-on bag that is no larger than 22 in. x 14 in. x 9 in. and one other personal item.

      For checked baggage, which can be 62 linear inches and weigh up to 50 lbs., there will be a fee of $25 for the first bag, $35 for the second, $100 for the third, fourth and fifth bags, and $150 for the sixth and any additional bags.

      Passengers flying in either first class or business class are allowed to check three bags free of charge.

      For bags that weigh over 50 lbs. but under 70 lbs., a $50 charge will be applied to each bag. For each bag weighing between 70 lbs. and 100 lbs., the charge will be $100. Bags weighing over 100 lbs. will not be accepted as checked baggage.

      For bags that are larger than 62 linear inches, there will be a charge of $150 per bag. Anything larger than 126 linear inches will not be accepted as checked baggage.

      For travel to Europe, in Europe and from Europe, each passenger is permitted one carry-on, one checked bag and one personal item at no charge. Bags over 70 lbs. will not be permitted.

    Delta Airlines

    • Delta Airlines allows for passengers to have one carry-on item and one personal item free of charge. These items cannot exceed 22 in. x 14 in. x 9 in. and must fit in either the overhead compartment of the aircraft or beneath the seat in front of you.

      All checked baggage must be 50 lbs. or less and no larger than 62 linear inches. For travel within the U.S., Canada, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, the cost of your first checked item is $23 if you check-in online or $25 at the airport. The second bag is $32 online or $35 at the airport. The third bag will be $125 and the fourth through tenth bags will each have a charge of $200.

      For those traveling between the U.S. and Europe, there will be no fee for the first checked bag. For the second bag, the fee will be $70 online and $76 at the airport. The third through tenth bags will each carry a charge of $200.

      Checked bags that weigh more than 50 lbs. but less than 70 lbs. will carry an additional charge of $90. Bags weighing between 71 lbs. and 100 lbs. will be $175 and no bag over 100 lbs. will be accepted. For flights to and from Europe, bags weighing between 51 lbs. and 70 lbs. will be $150 and no bag heavier than 70 lbs. will be accepted.

      There will be a $175 charge for bags between 63 linear in. and 80 linear in. and for those that are between 81 linear in. and 115 linear in. the charge will be $300.

    Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air

    • Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air allows one carry-on bag measuring up to 10 in. x 17 in. x 24 in. as well as one personal item free of charge.

      Checked baggage, which can weigh up to 50 lbs. and be 62 linear in., will carry a fee of $15 for the first bag and $25 for the second.

      For checked bags that weigh between 51 lbs. and 100 lbs., the fee will be $50 per bag. For those that are between 63 linear in. and 80 linear in., the charge is $50. For 81 linear in. to 115 linear in., it is $75. Bags over 100lbs. and/or 115 linear in. will not be accepted.

    Considerations

    • Always keep in mind that there are exceptions with every airline and that you should always check the website of the airline you are traveling with to determine your allowances and exceptions before arriving at the airport.

      Remember too that if you are flying with multiple airlines, the rules of each airline will apply to their portion of the flight.
