Things to Do in Honolulu in December

Year after year, Honolulu attracts high numbers of tourists throughout all the four seasons with beautiful beaches and a variety of attractions. Whether a vacation is planned for summertime or in the middle of December, Honolulu offers a variety of festivals and events to entertain its many visitors. The month of December offers specific events and festivities that do not occur at any other time of the year.
  1. Honolulu Marathon

    • Each year on the second Sunday of December, Honolulu holds its annual marathon. The race starts on Ala Moana Boulevard in Honolulu and ends near the Kapiolani Park Bandstand in Waikiki. Walkers and runners are welcome to enter the race. Entries can be faxed, mailed or filled out online before Nov. 5. After Nov. 5, entries must be hand delivered to "late registration" located inside the Hawaii Convention Center, and fees will be raised.

    Honolulu City Lights Festival

    • During the month of December, Honolulu's City Hall and Civic Center grounds are decorated with holiday decorations and lights. Over 75,000 guests annually gather to enjoy the city employees' Christmas tree exhibit, gingerbread house, wreath displays, strolling musicians and visit with the man of the evening, Santa Claus. Each year features a different theme, for example for the 25th anniversary of Honolulu City Lights in 2009 was "Ku'u Home - Our Home."

    Street Market

    • Every Saturday at the City Square in Kalihi, right outside the downtown area of Honolulu, is a street market. From 9 a.m.to 2 p.m., different vendors offer produce, cut flowers, crafts, baked bread and a variety of other things. Each week vendors are different, making each time a new experience. No admission cost is required and free parking is offered.
