Cheapest Places to Go on Vacation

Tough economic times shouldn't stop you from taking a much needed vacation. When money is tight, vacations are often postponed. With mounting evidence supporting the value vacations have to your overall health, postponing might be detrimental to your health. If you have a vacation coming up but are short on cash, there are plenty of places you can go that will be enjoyable while not breaking the bank.
  1. The Need for Vacations

    • Vacations are not only a great escape from your everyday world, they can be beneficial to your health. A recent study conducted by researchers at Marshfield Clinic showed women who take vacations are less likely to become tense, depressed or tired. Men benefit from vacations as well. Researchers from the State University of New York found men who take vacations every year reduce their overall risk of death by 20%, and their risk of death by from heart disease by as much as 30%.

    Inexpensive Destinations

    • Looking for a cheap vacation? If you're into the great outdoors, consider going camping. Campsites are much cheaper than hotels, and provide you with the opportunity to become one with nature. (Try roasting marshmallows at a hotel!) From exploring nature trails to singing campfire songs, camping is a cheap and relaxing way to spend your vacation. A word of caution: While camping is cheap, camping gear is not. If you don't already have the equipment needed, you may be able to borrow from friends or family.

If camping isn't for you, maybe a short drive to visit the grandparents might be in order. Grandparents and grandchildren will love the visit, and you're pocketbook will love the price. Not only is this an opportunity to bond, but your children can learn a little more about their heritage.

    Timing is Everything

    • You can get deep discounts to popular destinations with a little planning and flexibility. Travel during off-seasons to get deep discounts on hotel rooms, air travel and rental cars. For example, a upscale room in Las Vegas might set you back as much as $400 in July during the peak summer season. That same room can be had for around $100 in October. Not only is it cheaper going in the off-season, but it's also less crowded.

    An Option Everyone Can Afford

    • If money is too tight even for the most inexpensive vacations, there is still another option. Sometimes the best vacations are the ones where you do absolutely nothing! Staying home for a vacation may not sound like a vacation, but after a week of just relaxing at home you may feel otherwise. You can't beat the price, and no packing is required. Turn off all phones and resist the urge to check email for a completely relaxing experience.
