Places to Vacation in December

If you're looking for a cheaper and less crowded vacation destination, planning a winter getaway may be ideal for you. Flights, hotels, and itineraries during the month of December are less expensive because this time frame is considered the off-peak travel season--with the exception of the Christmas holiday. That said, there are great options to consider when looking for that ideal wintertime vacation spot.
  1. Sunny Sensations

    • Warmer climate vacations include Florida and the Bahamas.

If you live in the U.S. and would like to stay domestic, any part of Florida is the ideal vacation spot. For a party weekend with friends, Miami is the place to be. If you're interested in more of a family vacation, try Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida. According to DWinsider.com (Disney World Insider), the off-peak times are the second week of September through May, with the exception of holidays and Spring Break. Off-peak times mean cheaper airline fare and less expensive hotel accommodations. Smaller crowds equal more fun.

For that warm, relaxing destination, consider going tropical. If not restricted by geography and in search of a cultural experience, an island such as Aruba or Grand Bahama is perfect--where the winter temperatures average around seventy-five degrees.

    Winter Wonderlands

    • Consider a ski resort for an activity-filled winter vacation.

If you live in a warmer climate--or even in a cool climate--and look forward to pulling out the wool hats and scarves during your vacation, consider heading to a winter resort. Lake Tahoe is the perfect spot for ski lovers. Even for non-skiers, there are other options as well. Lake Tahoe in the wintertime offers beautiful scenic outdoor hikes. Hang out by the fire at the lodge to make this the ideal romantic December getaway or go family-style and enjoy the many outdoor activities that include snowboarding, sleigh rides, and tubing. Great overseas destinations include Paris, which is often cheaper because most tourist flock to the beautiful city in the springtime as opposed to the winter. During the colder months it rains quite a bit and is cold, but you most likely won't see any snow. The famous sites are just as breathtaking. Also, this is the best time to have that natural Parisian experience because the city is almost void of any tourists during off-peak seasons.

    Mid-Climates

    • There is plenty to do in a city like New Orleans.

Let's say you don't necessarily favor the colder temperatures and that hot is just not what you are looking for. If you are in search of that in-between climate, New Orleans--or as the locals say, "Naw'lins"--may be just the spot for you. During November and December the temperature averages approximately sixty degrees and is perfect for outdoor activities, such as swamp tours. Consider taking a canal street ferry to Algiers, a town on the other shore of the Mississippi River, where you can do plenty of shopping and dining on local cuisine. For children, there's the Aquarium of the Americas, where they can catch a glimpse of a rare white alligator and other wildlife.
