How to Find Cheap Airline Tickets for Students

Students are not entitled to discounts when buying tickets through the regular channels, such as travel agencies or discount websites. However, students can utilize one of several ways to save money when buying airline tickets. If you're on a budget, always try to adjust your travel plans to fly during the week, as weekends tend to be more expensive. Also, look for the availability of cheaper tickets during "inconvenient" flying times, such as late nights.

Book your ticket through StudentUniverse, a website that offers special discounts for students, not only on airfare, but also hotels, attractions, textbooks and other school-related items. To buy your ticket, you need to present proof that you're a student, which can be as simple as using email with an .edu suffix.

Get an International Student ID Card. The ISIC card is valid for one year and available to full-time students for a one-time fee. At the time of publication, the cost was $25. Some airlines offer discounts to holders of ISIC cards, but these discounts vary throughout the year and might not be available on all routes all the time. If you're concerned about the discounts available, call your favorite airlines in advance to find out if they offer discounts for ISIC cardholders.

Use AirTran for cheap standby tickets. AirTran offers special discounts for students between the ages of 18 and 22 who are willing to fly standby. You won't be able to pick a seat or an exact time, but tickets to over 60 destinations in the United States and the Caribbean start for as little as $60, at the time of publication. To get started, you'll have to create a free account in the AirTran rewards program, available through their website.
