The skies can be unfriendly to your wallet. The average domestic plane ticket cost $358 in the first quarter of 2011, an increase of 8.4 percent from the previous year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics. And that's just for one ticket. If you and your family don't want to be stuck in your hotel because you spent all of your travel money on airline tickets, you'll need to plan ahead.
Start searching for tickets as early as possible. Many airlines give discounts for tickets purchased at least 21 days in advance.
Call different airlines and compare prices. Tell them up front that you are searching for cheap tickets. Ask them if they have any specials. If you are a senior ask them about senior discounts. Most airlines are happy to inform you of promotions and discounts. Some offer bonus credits for signing up for their frequent flyer programs.
Consider flying at unpopular times. If you don't mind leaving at midnight, red eye flights can save you money. Also midweek flights can be less expensive than weekend travel. Mondays and Fridays are often more expensive as those are heavy business travel days. Your best bet for a cheap airline ticket is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Avoid flying on the weekends and holidays.
Check with a travel agent. A knowledgeable agent could be your ticket to a cheap flight.
Use online travel aggregrator sites to help you price your flights and find the best deal.
Research nearby airports. Some airlines may charge you less to fly to another airport near your destination. Decide how far away you can land and plan from there.
Choose flights with more layovers and stops for longer trips. You may have to wait longer to reach your destination, but you will save.
Consider booking a package deal. You may get a discount on your airfare, hotel and car rental if you book them all at once.
