Airplane tickets are a costly expense so finding a good deal when you are going on a trip is paramount. The cost for a plane ticket is not fixed. You can get a different price on the same seat on the same plane, depending on when and how you purchase the ticket. That is why before you purchase any airline ticket you should do your homework.
Check online travel sites. Compare prices by checking at least three online sites. Wait a day or two and check again. Prices will sometimes drop over just the course of a few days.
Shop early in the week. Historically, airfare sales tend to peak early in the week and fares will climb near the end of the week, according to Rick Seaney, the CEO of FareCompare.
Plan ahead and be flexible as to the day you leave and from what airport you leave. If your city has a secondary airport, the prices there may be much cheaper. You may even want to consider driving to another city close to you if you can save money leaving from that city instead of your hometown.
Shop early. Start looking for airfares about four months before your trip. Sign up for e-mail alerts on the cheapest fares for the route you want to fly.
Consider changing your departure or arrival date. The days right before and after a holiday are often the most expensive time to travel. If possible, move your departure date up to a week before the holiday or travel early in the morning on the actual holiday. Tickets will most likely be cheaper than if you try to travel at peak times.
Check directly with the airlines. Sometimes they offer great deals on their own that are not offered on online discount sites.
Let your travel agent do the work. Although some airlines have increased fees on travel agents to book flights, your agent may still be able to get you a better price.Remember you do not pay for their services, and they may have some special connection with an airline or carrier so they can compete.
Consider a package deal. If you purchase the plane ticket, hotel and excursions together you may save money on your airline tickets.
