Do not let a fly-by-night tour operator make off with your money and your vacation dreams. A little homework will go a long way toward giving you peace of mind, especially when dealing with an unfamiliar tour company. Follow the steps below to ensure that you can count on your tour operator.
Ask your local Better Business Bureau if there have been any complaints against the company.
Beware of companies that only have a Web site address. Get a physical business address, the name of the owner and a non-800 telephone number. This information will be useful in case you need to file a complaint later.
Verify that your tour operator belongs to a reputable industry organization. Check with the United States Tour Operators Association and the American Society of Travel Agents.
Verify that your tour operator is able to get insurance. If not, it is a good bet that the operator is having financial difficulties. Check the AIG Travel Guard Web site (see Resources below).
