Tropical storms result from low-pressure weather conditions, have a center warmer than the air surrounding them, and form in tropical areas. Depending on their geographical location, they are also called cyclones, hurricanes or tropical cyclones.
A tropical storm warning means the storm is occurring or will likely occur, and will reach a specified coastal area within 24 hours.
A tropical storm watch means there is a chance a storm will form and pose a threat to a coastal area within 36 hours.
Giving names to tropical storms and hurricanes makes it easier to recognize them, refer to them, and remember them.
Tropical storms and hurricanes most commonly originate in the western Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, and near the Cape Verde Islands off the West African coast.
