Blizzards prove dangerous because of strong winds and cold temperatures combining to create strong wind chill. If wind picks up, a blizzard may be imminent. Look for rustling tree leaves or shaking signs of mail boxes. If weather predictions suggest safety or above-freezing temperatures you can go outside to feel the wind for yourself. Be careful not to go too far from safety if you suspect a blizzard.
You can predict snowfall and the possibility of a blizzard in a few ways. A gray skyline with clouds low in the sky that look line rain clouds often means snow. A halo around the sun or moon also suggests snow. If it is already snowing, a blizzard is more likely. Take note of the intensity of the snow and how long the snow has continued. If snow falls consistently and clouds still appear heavy, a blizzard is much more likely.
Animals can sense weather changes and vibrations in the earth that human beings cannot experience. If birds that normally appear on a tree are now missing or your dog is acting strangely, a blizzard is more likely. Birds often fly lower in the air before a snowstorm and animals such as rabbits and chipmunks often avoid leaving their resting places.
