1. Purchase car from dealer.
- When you buy a car from a dealer, they provide you with a temporary tag until your actual license plate arrives usually by mail.
2. Transfer old plates to the new car
- Remove the tag form the old car.
- Fill out Form MV-1: Application/Certificate of Title.
- Complete an Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form MV-1T) if you’re selling a vehicle that’s model year 1995 or newer.
- Bring required forms and fees to your county tax commissioner’s office.
- Temporary tags will be issued immediately.
3. Purchase a car privately
- Obtain Bill of Sale from the owner including: names of buyer, seller, description of the vehicle, date, time of sale, selling price, and amount of any trade-in.
- Fill out Form MV-1; Application/Certificate of title
- Complete an Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form MV-1T) if applicable
- Form T-22B must be completed and signed by both the buyer and the seller.
- Bring required forms, title (if it’s not already surrendered to the DDS) and fees (fees vary by county).
- Temporary paper tag will be issued on the spot.
4. Renew current registration for a different car
- Visit the county tax commissioner’s office to renew your current registration.
- Bring your current license plate, Form T-22A: Application for Renewal of Registration and Renewal Fees.
- Temporary tag will be issued in some counties.
