There are a few exceptions to this law. If you are experiencing homelessness, you may be able to get a permit from the county that will allow you to sleep in your car for a limited period of time. Additionally, if you are working a shift that starts or ends late at night, you may be able to get a permit that allows you to sleep in your car for up to 4 hours per night.
If you are caught sleeping in your car in Orange County, you may be cited and fined. The fine can be as high as $500. In some cases, your vehicle may also be impounded.
To avoid getting a citation, it is best to find a safe and legal place to sleep if you are unable to go home. There are a number of homeless shelters and motels in Orange County that offer low-cost or free overnight stays. You can also find a list of safe parking lots where you can sleep in your car on the Orange County Sheriff's Department website.
