Can you insure your car with a learners permit in New York City?
In New York City, you cannot insure a car with a learner's permit on your own. However, you can be added as a secondary driver to someone else's policy if you are using their car to practice driving. In order to do this, you will need to provide the insurance company with a copy of your learner's permit and proof of enrollment in a driver's education course.
Once you have obtained your driver's license, you will need to purchase your own car insurance policy. In New York City, all drivers are required to have car insurance, regardless of whether or not they own a car. If you are caught driving without insurance, you could face a fine of up to $1,500 and/or up to 30 days in jail.
