Why do planes fly over the arctic when traveling between New York City and Moscow Russia?

Airplanes do not fly over the Arctic on their way from New York City to Moscow. The traditional flight path takes aircraft across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe and then follows a southern route to Moscow, avoiding the extreme weather conditions and challenging terrain of the Arctic.
