How to Obtain a NYC Fireguard License

A person acting as a fireguard shall hold a fireguard limited liability company license or work as an employee of such company. This license is issued to persons who have submitted a completed application for registration as a fireguard, furnished evidence of having the appropriate level of liability insurance, and submitted to a background check.

There are two options to obtain a NYC fireguard license:

By Application

1) Complete the NYC Department of Buildings DOB NOW: Fireguard License application.

2) Submit your completed application to the Department of Buildings.

3) Pay the required fee ($20.00).

4) If your application is approved, you will be issued a Fireguard License.

Via Reciprocity

Certain other state and local government jurisdictions issue licenses that are recognized as substantially equivalent to the New York City Fireguard License. If you hold such a license from another jurisdiction and meet the requirements of Section 28-206.1(a) of the New York City Administrative Code, you may be eligible to obtain a New York City Fireguard License by reciprocity.

To apply for a Fireguard License by reciprocity:

1. Complete a Fireguard License by Reciprocity Application (PDF)

2. Include with your application a copy of your valid fireguard license from another jurisdiction.

3. Submit your completed application and required documents to the Department of Buildings by:

• Mail or in-person to:
