Why did the king cancel Massachusetts Charter?
King James II cancelled Massachusetts Charter in 1684 because of the Puritans' intolerance and opposition to his policies. The Massachusetts Bay Colony had been founded by Puritans in 1630 as a refuge from religious persecution in England. However, the Puritans quickly established their own strict religious regime in the colony and refused to tolerate other faiths. They also resisted royal authority, refusing to allow royal officials to enter the colony and collect taxes. In 1684, James II revoked the Massachusetts Charter and established the Dominion of New England, which was ruled by a royal governor.
